The Tigers are one week away from Opening Day. The front office is already scrambling. This is not how you build a winning roster. This is how you manage a crisis. Management waited until the final hour to finalize the outfield and the bullpen. It exposes a glaring lack of depth and poor planning.

Look at the outfield decisions. Willie Figueroa was just placed on the active roster. Matt Gray was optioned to Triple A Toledo. Activating a left fielder this late means the spring competition was either flawed or the evaluation process was broken. Sending Gray down to Toledo right before the bell rings shows a complete lack of conviction in the depth they supposedly secured.

The bullpen situation is even worse. Sergio Arellano was optioned to Toledo. He was then immediately placed on the International League 7-day injured list. The stint is retroactive to March 20. The front office knew he was hurt days ago. They optioned an injured pitcher to the minors instead of placing him on the major league injured list. It is a transparent attempt to manipulate the active roster. It is a cynical move. It is also a terrible way to treat a player and a bad look for a franchise that demands trust from its clubhouse.

This sets a troubling table for the 2051 season. The first pitch has not even been thrown. The front office is already playing semantic games with the depth chart. If management is this disorganized and reactive in late March, expect more panicked decisions when the dog days of summer arrive. You cannot win a division with last-minute patch jobs. The Tigers need a concrete plan. Right now, they are just moving pieces around to hide their mistakes.
