Detroit Tigers shortstop Arturo Arambula is dealing with a sore back. The club announced he suffered back spasms while throwing the ball and is officially considered day-to-day.
Throwing a baseball is a violent, unnatural motion, and sometimes the body reminds you of that fact. Arambula felt it during a throwing session, and the resulting diagnosis is straightforward back spasms. The training staff expects the stiffness to keep him out of action for about a week.
It is a day-to-day designation on the official injury report, but in baseball terms, a week on the shelf is still a week on the shelf. The infield will have to roll without their shortstop while he works through the issue. Back bugs are never something you want to rush, especially for a middle infielder who needs to bend, twist, and throw from awkward angles on a daily basis. You can’t field a groundball if you can’t stand up straight.
The club will monitor his progress and see how he responds to treatment over the next few days. There is no sense in pushing a guy through back tightness only to have it flare up again the minute he steps back onto the dirt. For now, Arambula is trading his glove for some rest and a spot in the training room, hoping the spasms calm down before the week is up.
The Tigers will just have to fill the gap at shortstop and shuffle the infield dirt until he is cleared to take the field again. It is just another routine bump in the road, but it is one they will have to navigate without their shortstop for the next seven days.
