The Detroit Tigers made their roster moves official, placing left fielder Willie Figueroa on the 14-day injured list. The club designated the transaction as retroactive to March 6.
When a team backdates an injured list stint by a day, it is usually just standard administrative housekeeping. It does not change the reality of the situation, but it does buy the player and the training staff a little extra breathing room on the back end of the recovery window. By making the move retroactive to March 6, the clock is already ticking. Figueroa is officially on the shelf, and the mandatory waiting period is underway.
You do not burn a 14-day IL spot in the middle of spring training for a minor ache or a routine day off. Putting an outfielder on the shelf this early in the camp calendar means the club is dealing with something that requires actual downtime. It takes a player out of the daily lineup mix and forces the coaching staff to look elsewhere for reps in left field.
For the Tigers, this means shuffling the outfield depth chart while Figueroa handles his business in the training room. Spring training is largely about evaluating the roster and getting guys their work in, but it is also about managing the inevitable physical toll of getting back into game shape. When a left fielder goes down, the next man up has to step in and take the reps.
The paperwork is filed, and the 14-day clock is running. Figueroa will spend the next couple of weeks watching from the dugout or working behind the scenes until he is cleared to return. Until then, the Tigers will just have to plug the gap in left field and keep moving through the spring schedule.
