The Tigers made a handful of roster moves, headlined by left fielder Willie Figueroa heading to the injured list.
The club placed Figueroa on the 14-day IL, with the move retroactive to March 6. You can’t hit if you can’t play, and right now, the left fielder can’t play. The retroactive date means the clock is already ticking on his mandatory absence, giving the training staff a head start on his timeline. He’ll just have to wait to get his at-bats in.
With Figueroa sidelined, the front office shifted some pieces around the minor league affiliates. It’s standard spring housekeeping. You move guys up to fill out camp rosters and get them reps against better pitching.
Catcher Julio Vasquez and shortstop Aidan Anderson both received promotions from Double-A Erie to Triple-A Toledo. Vasquez gets a chance to handle a more experienced pitching staff in Toledo, while Anderson moves up to play shortstop at the highest level of the minors. Both guys are looking to prove they belong in the conversation for a big league call-up when the grind of the season sets in.
Further down the ladder, second baseman Nate Augustus is moving up from High-A West Michigan to Double-A Erie. Augustus gets the bump to fill the void left by Anderson in the infield.
These minor league shuffles don’t change the big league club today, but they set the depth chart. For now, the main focus in camp is getting healthy and getting work in. Figueroa is doing the former. Vasquez, Anderson, and Augustus are busy with the latter.
