Welcome to the spring training meat grinder.

It is an annual bloodletting where years of minor league grind are erased with a single press release. The New York Yankees didn’t hesitate, cutting ties with outfielder Shou-chien Kuo by releasing him. Just like that, he is gone. No farewell tour, just a transaction line.

Out in San Diego, the Padres were equally merciless. They designated center fielder Jared Hampton for assignment, tossing him into the waiver wire abyss. Not done with the paperwork, they also released pitcher Danny Armendariz. Two guys packing up their lockers in the same facility on the same day, victims of a numbers game they never had a chance to win.

General managers sit in air-conditioned suites and call it roster optimization. They claim it is just business. It is the same ugly reality every year. You draft them, you coach them, you tell them they are the future right up until you need their roster spot for a veteran reclamation project.

The ink dries, the transactions are filed, and the front offices move on to the next shiny toy. Meanwhile, a few more kids are booking one-way flights home. Don’t expect anyone in management to shed a tear. It’s just baseball.
