Every March, front offices act shocked when meaningless exhibition games break their expensive toys. It is 2051, and the script remains exactly the same.

The Cardinals watched their bullpen implode before a single pitch counted. Mike Montoya tore a flexor tendon. Chad Alexis partially tore his UCL. Both relievers are gone for at least ten months. Houston lost Matt Young to a UCL tear for up to a year. San Diego’s Alex Gardner has an arthritic elbow and is shelved for up to five months. Cleveland’s Rich Pearson is out six weeks with shoulder inflammation.

It is not just the pitchers throwing themselves into the trainer’s room. Atlanta’s Ivan Velarde tore a hamstring just running the bases. Chicago’s Hector Chabla hurt his shoulder on a defensive play. Getting plunked in games that do not matter sidelined New York’s Julio Valle with a broken collarbone and Miami’s Jose Godinez with a fractured finger. Both miss six weeks.

Now comes the desperate late-March spending to patch the holes. The Dodgers threw $19 million at starting pitcher Ismael Contreras for one year. Boston found a cheaper Band-Aid, tossing $3.2 million at Danny Mondolfo.

Opening Day arrives with half these rosters already in rehab. The front offices spent all winter building depth, only to watch it evaporate in spring training. When the real games start, expect a lot of minor leaguers pretending they belong.
