We spend all winter debating pitching mechanics. We obsess over spin rates and treat these guys like spun glass on the mound.

Then they get to the airport and forget how to walk.

Pittsburgh Pirates starter Jose Fierro will miss seven to eight weeks with a strained anterior cruciate ligament. He didn’t blow it out covering first base. He didn’t strain it fielding a bunt. He hurt it jumping an airport railing.

Let that sink in. A major league starting pitcher decided the best way to navigate a terminal was to hurdle fixed metal architecture.

I don’t care how high your vertical leap is in the weight room. Airports are not parkour courses. Railings exist to keep people from falling, not to serve as obstacles for bored athletes burning off adrenaline between flights.

This is the exact kind of preventable, boneheaded mistake that makes a mockery of the payroll. Teams invest millions in sports science and biometric tracking to keep their rotation healthy. All that meticulous care gets wiped out because a guy couldn’t be bothered to walk around a barrier.

Fierro is sidelined for two months. The Pirates have to scramble to fill his rotation spot.

Next time you’re in a terminal, just walk. It isn’t that complicated.
