The Chicago White Sox executed a sweeping roster overhaul just after Opening Day, designating five players for assignment and placing them on waivers.
The move clears significant space on the 40-man roster and removes a pair of starting pitchers, a center fielder, a relief pitcher, and a catcher from the active club.
Starting pitchers Kyle Green and Danny Avila were both designated, creating immediate vacancies in the Chicago rotation. Center fielder Bronson Mackey, catcher Javy Carmona, and reliever Akimasa Endo round out the group placed on waivers.
Designating five players at once is a rare volume of turnover for the first week of the regular season. Removing two starters and an everyday center fielder signals a rapid, perhaps unexpected, shift in the club’s evaluation of its spring training and early-season depth. Management is clearly prioritizing roster flexibility over holding onto depth pieces that were not in their immediate opening-week plans.
For the rest of the AL Central, the waiver wire just got significantly more interesting. Rival front offices will have 48 hours to evaluate whether any of the five players are worth claiming and absorbing onto their own 40-man rosters. Finding two major league starting pitchers and a center fielder on the wire in early April is an unusual windfall for division rivals looking to patch early-season holes or stash depth.
If the players go unclaimed, Chicago will have seven days to trade, release, or outright them to the minor leagues. Until the claims period closes, baseball operations departments in Cleveland, Detroit, Kansas City, and Minneapolis will be monitoring the transaction wire closely to see what falls into their lap. Claiming a player requires assuming his existing contract, which could deter some clubs, but the sheer volume of talent available makes this a unique early-season test of the division’s waiver priorities.
